The Problem

The Problem

Pigmentation is caused by excess melanin. A number of factors can trigger an increase in melanin production including sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and skin injuries or inflammation. It can lead to darker areas of the skin often called age spots or melasma.

How It Works

The Problem

The laser light is absorbed by the melanin – or pigment – in the skin, causing the cells to heat up resulting in them being damaged and the body naturally removes them. The treatment area will darken as the pigmented cells are lifted to the surface forming a very light scab. The cells are then naturally shed after a few days, thus reducing or removing the pigment completely.

Upon assessment and depending on your requirements, we will use either the Sciton BBL laser or the Lynton Excelight IPL. You can expect to see results after two weeks from your first laser pigmentation treatment. You will be advised if you need a course of treatments depending on the size and severity of the area.

You must not be taking any light sensitive medication. You must not be using topical steroids in the area. No sun exposure or sun beds in the last 4 weeks. No fake tan, gradual tan or instant tan in the area in the last 2 weeks.

Any change in medication you must inform us at least 48 hrs before the treatment (including herbal remedies). For laser rejuvenation Skinade or Nutrakos will give your skin the collagen building blocks it needs and can be started a month before or at the time of treatment for at least 3 months.

Pigment will darken and should be left to naturally shed from the skin. Do not pick or scratch as this could cause scarring and more pigmentation. Areas with red veins may appear ‘flushed’ or possibly ‘bruised’ for a few days. Rejuvenated areas may be pink after the treatment. Aloe Vera can be used to soothe the area. Use a cool compress to reduce the heat. Avoid perfumed products and heat treatments for 5 days. Cleanse your skin as normal with your ZO cleanser in the evening using cool or tepid water. Resume your ZO exfoliating polish and retinol when the skin has normalised. Always use SPF with excellent UVA protection as the treated area may be more sensitive to the sun for at least one month. We recommend the ZO range range for ongoing skin health. For red veins you must also not exercise for 3 days after the treatment. Do not drink alcohol, take any blood thinners or anti inflammatories for 5 days after the treatment.

If you are prone to pigmentation it is really important that you stay protected in the sun. Top up treatments may be needed over the years for those prone to pigmentation.Anyone without a tan and not on any light sensitive medication.

Pigmentation is most commonly caused by sun damage, hormones and trauma.

New pigmentation can develop post treatment. Sun damage can take up to 40 years to become visible on the skin so even if you stay out of the sun now the damage may already be done. We can also do preventative treatments to prevent this from becoming visable on the surface of the skin.

The treatment feels sharp and hot but it is very quick. It may feel a little hot and tingly for an hour or so after treatment.

The pigmentation often darkens or grays at first and then forms a light scab which will naturally be exfoliated from the skin after 5-10 days leaving no or reduced pigment. 1-3 treatments are usually required.

Anywhere on the face and body.
